The Colours of Silence

Awesome! This is April.

The pictures on this page are scans from a colour negative film. The first time I saw them, I could hardly believe the intensity of the colours. Jim and I had been up on the hills behind Henderland Farm and with Jim organising his Border Collie's to drive some sheep our way to be photographed, I set up my camera and made some pictures of the landscape.

Of course I had noticed the variety of colours on the hills on clear blue days like this one. After all, I have lived amongst these hills for about 8 years. But I was just not prepared for how well they had been recorded on film. I had been making a lot of digital photographs; my old camera being used only occasionally for making slides but these I did not scan so I never saw them on a computer screen.

I guess I had become used to the rather bland rendering of colour from my early model digital camera. When these pictures were made, in April! 2003, the Coolpix I was using back then had great difficulty recording different hues of blue. Blue, as is obvious from these photographs, is one of the dominant colours of Scotland. So much for early adopting of new technology!

Anyway, if I ever get a chance to visit the area again, I will be taking my old Nikon F2 camera along with me, and a box full of Kodak film. Hope you'll keep that Gator till I get there, Jim.
