The farmers in this area often designate odd bits of their land for growing some Sunflowers, as deer are fond of them. The variety in this painting had larger petals in proportion to their hearts, which made them much more suited to a vase.

We grew this variety of the rose, Troika, in our rose garden in the South of the Netherlands.
