Small Bibles with silver clasps

with a Watch and a Candlestick

These small Bibles have been with me for as long as I can remember. As has the old silver watch, the small hand of which is broken and lost.

The candlestick in the painting is actually the bottom part - the stand - of an oil lamp. I must have the rest somewhere, but I never use it. Electric light is progress, and a couple of candles easily compete with oil lamps in providing atmosphere, but without the smell and smother.

For this painting I decided on a frame which was handmade in an artisan's workshop in Nice.

As I often do, I first painted a small panel to make sure the composition would 'work.' The study appears on the page 'small paintings.'
