Jug & Bowl
Earthenware and fruit
three, no four, variations on a theme
These paintings feature one of the earthenware jars my mother gave me a couple of years ago, almost an entire life-time after she had received it from her mother. It is made of a special grey clay, found along the river Rhine in Germany.
"Jar, bowl with lemons, and apples"
Oil on canvas, 2008
40 cm x 25 cm
Traditional black frame
The apples are Goudreinetten, a Dutch variety indispensable for our traditional apple pie. I bought them because they were twice the normal size and had a beautiful soft matte skin. Considering that my mother used to bake the best apple pie in the world, I liked the thought of combining them with the old jar.
Oil on panel
To complete the composition, and to add extra colour, I added a white bowl with some so called wild lemons. This bowl, incidentally, came from the same antique shop as the Regency decanter in another painting.
Oil on canvas
40 cm x 50 cm
gilt frame with linen inset
I painted this still life a total of three times. The last one (top) was set in a black frame with a narrow gold effect band on the inside. The small panel version (middle) can be purchased as a fine art greeting card, the larger version was framed in a gilded frame with a linen inset.
